Question
Dear Saleem

Can tae kwon do be self taught through a book? There are many books that claim that they can teach you basic tae kwon do. Also what kind of wood are use in a demonstration, when a master is breaking them?

Answer
John,

Tae Kwon Do, like any other martial art can be 'self-taught' through a book. The problem however is how you interpret what is written in the book. If two people were to train themselves with the same book, they would both have varied results and different technique, and they would both be correct according to themselves because that is how they interpreted what was written.

In order to gain the most from books, i would suggest learning the basic kicks and blocks. Once you have a feel for the kicks and blocks, you can use the book to improve your technique.

In regards to your question on what boards are made of, I can't speak for all clubs but i can say that the majority of clubs in my area tend to use 'Pine' wood boards.

I hope that these answers will further your knowledge and i thank you for the question.
Saleem
