Taiwan - unreserved train tickets?

Expert: Kuo-syn Liao - 11/4/2009

Question
Hi!  Thanks to your great answer to another question, I have been able to navigate the TWRail website and find the trains that fit my schedule to get my from Taoyuan/Taipei to Hualien (so thank you already just for that helpful info!)

my problem/question is, I land at 2130 and will not get into Taipei to catch the #63 or #65 train until well after the 2200 cutoff for ticket pickup.... Both those trains are Chu Kuang...

What do you think my odds are for being able to walkup and get unreserved tickets?  (or should I scrap my travel plans altogether?  I'm trying to get to Hualien for a race the following morning unfortunately :(  )

Also am I going to be able to survive the 4hr train ride standing up or is that suicidal?

Thank you so much for your help & wisdom!
-Dan

Answer
i think you had better stay at taipei for 1 night, land at 2130, maybe you can arrive taipei at 2330?
not sure, so stay at taipei.  you can do nothing even if you arrive hualian at 0300.

if you take 0645 the next morning, you will arrive hualian at 0938.

just about 3 hours late than your risky plan.

the 4hr train ride standing up==it depends on the quantity of the passengers of the train,

if few passengers , you can have seat, if many, then maybe you can sit beside the door,

if crowded, maybe you have to stand.....

so i suggest: stay at taipei.............

welcome to taiwan

feel free to ask me

====Unfortunately I have to try and catch the train that night,
===if you really have to catch the train that night, call a taxi after you arrive, then maybe you can catch it. and I don't think twrail will reserve the tickets for you that night.?
i will call twrail to ask about this.
if you really have to, tell me, i will try my best.....
