Subject: Requirements for Chinese national to stay in Taiwan

Question
I am an American, but my fiancee is a Chinese national.  I would like the
opportunity to teach English in Taiwan, but only if my fiancee could accompany
me.  Does she need a passport, visa, or some other paperwork to stay in
Taiwan?

Answer
Hi Michael,

I'm sorry to tell you, but it's very difficult for Chinese nationals to get a visa to visit Taiwan, unless they are visiting as part of a tour, as part of an official delegation, or as part of an official business trip of some kind.

My understanding is that if your fiancee has not been back to China for a long time (years), and she is permanently resident in the U.S., you may have a shot. Otherwise, you are probably out of luck.

However, this is pretty much just my understanding. I think that you should definitely talk to the local TECO (Taipei Economic and Cultural Office) that has jurisdiction over where you live - which I assume is in the U.S. They will have the exact rules for this sort of thing, and can better help answer your question.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the entity in charge of visas. Their local offices in the US are your best bet.
BOCA website: http://www.boca.gov.tw/mp.asp
BOCA Offices in the U.S.: http://www.boca.gov.tw/lp.asp?CtNode=125&CtUnit=72&BaseDSD=18&mp=2&xq_xCat=5

I'm sorry I wasn't better able to help.

/Lotta
