Question
Hi there,
I have a great idea for a talk show I doubt has been done yet. Have searched the web quite thoroughly and haven't found anything like it.
It's new and innovative but I am afraid of even letting on to people what's it's about for fear the idea might be poached and someone else run with it.
I am based in South Africa and there is a great market for something like this in our country and potentially the world over.
What would be the first steps to take in securing secrecy when dealing with production companies and registering this idea or rights to it?
As it's a fairly new idea and still in it's brainstorming-with-friends stage, I'd like to get the legal bit sorted before pitching to outsiders, getting opinions, connducting polls or have brainstorming sessions.
Hope you can help me.

Rgds
Melanie

Answer
Melanie: Have anyone you talk to about your show idea FIRST sign what is referred to as an "NDA" = Non Disclosure Agreement.  Disclosure of your info and/or use of it by them may well give you cause to institute a lawsuit against them for breach of the agreement. Also I would STRONGLY recommend that you consult with an attorney in your area to be ABSOLUTELY SURE he knows you whole idea/concept: He can BEST ADVISE YOU of any other steps you should take to protcet your idea.
