Question Hi John. I am a reporter/anchor at a CBS affiliate station in Missouri. I talked with both my news director and GM about a morning talk show that would replace our synidicated shows (Martha, Montel, etc.) and they like the idea but I need some help on backrground info. For example, I would need to find how much it costs to start and produce this type of show and how much money it could possibly bring in. Our local competing station has a morning variety show, but the hosts are getting old and they will soon either can him and revamp the show or discontinue it. But I know they do very well because it features people from the local community and so in turn, people want to watch it. Their ratings are great but I know viewers would also like to see a much needed face lift. I used to work there and hosted the show for a week and I know what it takes to put one on. I want our station to do a modernized talk show before they do. Do you have any suggestions on where to start? Thanks
Answer Amy: I would do both a "google search" for "tv show production companies" and check with both your local Chamber of Commerce and the Yellow Pages under the same category. They would be best equipped to give you $$$$ info on how much it would cost to produce a morning talk show. My experience tells me that you are bucking big odds to get a "morning talk show" to replace a nationally syndicated tv show. Remember it's all about ratings!!!!!
You might have better luck at your "...local competing station" in convincing them to both hire you and do a revamped same type show. Best of luck.
