Question Hello,
I'm travelling to Tanzania for about 6 weeks in August/September. What do you recommend I take with me in terms of money? I thought a mixture of traveller's cheques/cash/US dollars and an ATM card would be feasible but have heard that ATMs are not reliable. I'll be in a mixture of urban and rural areas, with at least three weeks in a less urbanised area (small towns I think). Additionally do you know how I can travel from Moshi to Mwanza by bus? I will not have a Kenyan visa so do I need to go back to Dar from Moshi to get to Mwanza?
Thank-you
Josh
Answer Hi Josh
yes I would definitely take a mixture of cash and travellers cheques. Though with TCs these days you are charged quite a big commission but there is no getting round that. Cash is always best but then you have to be very careful. I would stick with US$ cash rather than sterling. You can take money out on Visa at any bank or change place but again there will be a charge. Your switch card can be used but I think only in Barclays Banks which you will find in the bigger towns
Have you bought a lonely planet guide or similar as most of your questions should be answered in there.
Moshi and Mwanza are both in Tanzania so I don't understand your question about the Kenyan visa? if you are going to Kenya by boat from Mwanza get a visa before you go to Africa.
You will definitely be able to get to Mwanza by bus but your best bet will be Moshi Bus station to tell you this. Or there might be some details in one of the guide books.
