Question My wife and I are interested to go to Tanzania and Kenya in 2005 for a tour of the major national parks and to see the wildlife. What are the best months of the year to go there.? Can you recommend several tour operatiors who are expert in arranging tours of these two countries to the sites I have indicated?
Answer
Dear Alan
Depending on what you are wanting to do and see depends on which months to go.
The long rains are in April and May so best avoided unless you are a keen birder.
The short rains are in November but they are usually pretty light and a good time to go if you want to do any walking in Nogorongoro Highlands or in any hills as the rains clear the dust and you get good views. Its also a quieter time and as its shoulder season some lodges lower their prices.
The wildbeast migration is an amazing spectacle which can be seen all year in either Kenya or Tanzania. In Kenya the best time for the migration is July to September due to this the Masai Mara can be very busy. For the rest of the year the migration is in Tanzania but an excellent time to see it is in February when the wildebeast drop their calves all within a few weeks of each other.
The driest time of year so when the wildlife veiwing is at its premium is July to November. As the bush gets drier the game moves towards water and as the grass dies there is less cover for animals so they are easier to see.
I would suggest September for the driest months where you can see the migration in Kenya and also have good game viewing in Tanzania. July and August are good to avoid due to school holidays and expensive flights.
