Question
i have just been told that i will be sent to join an expedition on the usambara mountains next semptember. i know its still early but i would like to know whether 9 days after i finish the expedition would be enough to take a short safari to the ngorongoro crater and go diving in zanzibar? i would also like your opinion of what i should do in those 9 days.
thanks
michelle

Answer
Hi Michelle,

It is possible but could be tight. It all depends on how you want (can afford) to travel.

I am assuming that your expedition will terminate back in Dar es Salaam?
To get to Arusha which is where you can pick up a safari to Ngorongoro - an internal flight will take about 1hr (account for transfer time). The local bus will take a full day and they leave from Dar at 7-7.30 am and arrive in Arusha about 5pm - God Willing and no breakdowns!

You have an option of accomodation in Arusha, from hostel to decent 2 star, to top range.

If you can afford to fly from Arusha to Zanzibar (it used to be about US $120 but don't quote me on that), that will save time and then you could have some excellent time on Zanzibar for diving and chilling out.

I know of some local safari companies who could help you and I can give you advise on places to stay/dive in Zanzibar
Be aware of the time of year - rainy season or not?
By the way, the Usumburu mountains are just fantastic, one of Tanzania's secrets, you will have a great time.

Best of luck. Sara.
