Subject: Stress fractures from tap dancing

Question
A few years back (I was in my 40s), I developed a stress fracture in a metatarsal bone.  We were working on those wing kicks where you pound down on the ball of the foot (over and over again).  I must mention that I wore high-heeled shoes the day the pain began, before and after class.  I am 53 years old now, in pretty good shape, take calcium twice a day.  I'm thinking of starting tap classes again.  Are there any warm-up exercises that may help me?  Or should I just stay away from any "pounding" moves.

Answer
Hi,  there are many styles of Tap that you do not have to "pound" your feet on the floor.  Actually you want to be very light on your feet with clear tap sounds.  I would suggest to do lots of ankle rolls, calf stretches, and relive'' plie' (ballet move, up on toes to bent knees).  I hope this helps.  Thanks for the question and keep on Tappin!
