I had a belly ring piercing 5 years ago and about a year later it had rejected the jewellery and caused a keloid, but the hole got pushed out along with the jewellery so there was no pierced hole. I had the Keloid removed a year ago and was sent to have radiation therapy on the particular spot.
I also had my appendix removed 10 years ago, this operation also caused a very ugly scar with a small amount of keloid appearance.. over the years this scar has flattened out and does not look that bad anymore. I am very interested in getting a tattoo next year but I am truly scared that this might cause me to get a keloid like scar as well. I am not sure who to ask if tattoos can cause keloids or not? If you can help me at all I would really appreciate it.
Answer Kerry-lee,
The rule of thumb is that if a person is prone to keloid scarring then they are not a candidate for tattooing or piercing. If anyone ever tries to tell you anything different they do not know what they are talking about. I am sorry, you will have to look for a different avenue of self expression.
I hope this has been of some help to you. If I can be of any further assistance please let me know.
