Question I have a 18 yr old daughter that is a full time student and living with us, and working. She received a W-2 for a job she worked at, and we want to claim her and file her income on our taxes. Can I do that and what form do I use. Thank you.
Answer You are entitled to claim your daughter as a dependent on your return but you cannot claim her income on your return. Your daughter is even not required to file at all unless her W-2 income exceeds $5,350. However, if there was income tax withheld on her W-2, she may want to file to get all of it back.
I want to add, if your daughter has more than $850 in UNearned income, the rules are a little more complicated. This would include such things as interest or dividends. Ask a follow-up if this is the case.
