Subject: Need help with 1099-MSC

Question
I have been unable to work for quite some time now but I have an old contract for a web site I host that renewed for 2007 and I received a 1099-MSC from them and it is my only income (2,400.00)I have read that if you make below a certain amount you don't need to file at all, but I don't know if this applies to a 1099-MSC. I am at a loss as to how I should file this and what forms I should use. I filed an extension because I am on a lot of medication and frankly everything is confusing to me especially sorting out tax code, to make matters worse I have not the money to pay someone to do it and I can not get any tax business to answer any emails and when I go to their physical locations there are always notes stating they will be back in Jan 08 for the new tax season. Have you any advice for me on this?

Thanks,

Dale

Answer
You must file.  You need a Sch C and SE along with your 1040.  You will owe taxes.

If you use someone besides a store front chain, I'm sure you can find someone to prepare your return.  Or all the forms are available at www.irs.gov and you can give it a go yourself.

Helen, EA in PA
