Subject: Student exempt situation

Question
Hello My son Justin age 17 is living in PA w/ his sister,he is working many hours and being taxed. he gets taxed about $80 for a 2 week period. what is the law on student taxes or being exempt in PA, I am from Westchester, NY so I dont have any idea.

Answer
PA is a flat tax state and if your son is working here, he will pay taxes here.  The tax rate is 3.07% for the state (and there is no exemption as long as he is your dependent) and the local taxes range from 0% to 4.25% (in Philly).

Helen, EA in PA
