For the past 10 years my family and I have lived in Richmond, VA. Recently I have accepted a job position in Ohio. I plan to be a geographic bachelor and return 2-3 weekends a month to VA. I have secured an apartment to rent in Ohio.
Do I report to my employer my apartment address in Ohio or my home address in Virginia?
Which address do I put on the W4 form?
Which address do I put on the Ohio IT-4 (employee's withholding exemption certificate)?
Do I do nonresident Ohio tax form or resident tax form?
Thanks,
John
Answer Assuming that the work in Ohio will not be permanent, and that you plan to continue living permanently in Virginia, you should keep your Virginia address on file with your employer. Likewise, use the VA address on the Form W-4, and the Ohio IT-4. When it comes time to file your income tax return you will do a nonresident return for Ohio, and a resident return for VA. You should have a tax professional prepare these returns to ensure that certain credits are properly claimed.
