Question
QUESTION: Dear Helen-

I owe about $50K in taxes for tax years of 04-08

I do not have 50K to pay now, and would like to go on a payment plan.

What is the best way for me to do this ?

Should I find one of these firms that negotiate for you, or should I just talk with the IRS ?

Where can I find some solid advice ?

I have $100K in my house, but do not want to sell it now.

I'm not employed now.

Thank you !

ANSWER: Do NOT go to a firm you have seen on TV or direct advertises to you.  You can set up a payment plan if you wish, or you can find a tax professional that will help you set up a plan.

Since you have the abiity to pay it with the equity in your home, the IRS will not accept an offer.

If you would like a referral, let me know your city and state and nearest closest large city if you are in a small one and I'll see if I know someone near you.

You can talk to them yourself, but you have to be so careful with that.

Yes, I would love a refferal. I'm in Boston.

Answer
I have some names, but I don't know any of them personally, so I would make a couple of phone calls (or emails) and see what they have to say.  If you want, you can run the responses by me.
