Question
I live in City A and work as a medical sales rep.  Twice a week I travel to City B staying overnight since most doctors want to meet for free dinnners.  Since it gets late I stay overnight.  The other three days I work in other areas around city B, where my employer is located, but go home at night.  It is about 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive.  This is just a temporary position for next to 6 to 10 months until I find a better job.

1.  Can I deduct motel/hotel for staying overnight twice per week?

2.  Is the mileage deductible?  I don't have a fixed office location as a sales rep, one person told me it was all deductible and another said the biggest portion from home to first doctor and last doctor back home was not deductible.

Answer
Hi Thomas if your employer does not reimburse you use form 2106 to deduct
2)if the distance  on a  overnite stay  is more than 50 miles from your home the  travel  it is deductible
On the other days you mileage is deductible except the round trip to your first visit(try to visit the closest doctor first!!)
