Subject: Edducation expenses

Question
Hi Mr. Kirk

In what circumstance, the high education related expenses such as tuition, room and board can be tax deducted.

Thanks.

Answer
The expenses need to be incurred for post secondary education of the taxpayer, taxpayer's spouse or dependant.

You can take the tuition credit or the education expenses deduction against gross income.  The deduction and credit are computed on form 8863.

Room and board fees are deductible if reasonable and set by the educational institution.
