Question If I buy 300 shares of stock for $9000.00 and later sell 200 of those shares for $9000.00 and keep 100 shares, do I owe capital gains taxes on the sale of the 200 shares? The 100 shares I'm keeping would be the profit.
Answer Tom,
If you buy 300 shares at $9000 , each share is $30 per share. if you sell 200 shares for $9000, your cost basis is 200 shares at $30 per share or $6000 leaving you with cost basis of 100 shares at $30 per share or $3000.
You would report a capital gain of $3000 ( Selling Price $9000 Cost of $6000) and have 100 shares with a cost basis of $3000
