Tax Law (Questions About Taxes) - taking care of mother

Expert: Carole Dunton - 10/28/2009

Question
My mother is in assisted living at present.
I am planning on quitting my job to take care of her in her home.
My husband says she can not be my employer without a tax #.
How will she pay me and how do we claim this at tax time?

Answer
Hi,

She can pay you with a W2 and withhold social security and medicare and pay her share of social security and medicare by filing a Schedule H with her tax return.  She can also withhold Federal Income Tax if you want her to do that.

Regards,
Carole
