Tax Law (Questions About Taxes) - incorrect filing

Expert: Glenn D Schnabel - 6/29/2009

Question
Hello. I had a summer job in 2008, and I wrote in my paperwork, when they hired me, that I was not considered as a dependant of anyone. But, I am a dependant, of my parents. This year I have the same job, and I filed as being a dependant of someone else. Now, I get less taxes taken out of every paycheck. Can I go back to last years taxes, and claim the difference? Thaank you.

Answer
Tea,

When you filed your return for 2008, did you file as a dependent of your parents? Hence no exemption?

If you file for 2009  claiming less allowances on your W-4, then at the end of the year you would gave less paid in and more in your paycheck.

Each year stands on its own. You cannot claim the difference.

If you had an overpayment of taxes in 2008, you could have applied any refund towards your 2009 tax return. I'm sure if you had a refund, you took it.
