Question I am a permanent resident of Florida. Beginning in March, I have been consulting this year in North Carolina where I expect to be on site in the state 167 days during the tax year (usually Mon- Thu). Will I need to file a state income tax return for NC? Their website says you're a resident if you're there 183 days or more. Could I be that lucky?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Answer Dear Jim,
You should file a tax return in each state where you've worked during the year even if you are not a resident of that state, though the rates and forms to file might be different for residents and non-residents. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the tax laws in North Carolina so I cannot determine whether you would be classified as a resident or not.
Best regards,
