Tax Law (Questions About Taxes)/write offs

I am a single male and have no house or any tax write offs except student loan interest. I just got a new job but it is out of state but I will not do a permanent relocation so my address will not change. I want to be able to fly back and forth but the company said that I will have to pay for my own flights or transportation. They provide me a free place to stay plus per diem while I am there. Will I be able to write off the plane tickets back and forth?

Thanks for your question.

If the new job is permanent, expected to last for more than 12 months, or is of indefinite duration, the travel back to you home is not deductible.  In addition, the per diem and value of the lodging is taxable income.

If this is a temporary situation not described above, your travel back home would be deductible unless it was daily. The lodging would not be taxable, but the per diem would be if it was in excess of the standard meal allowance allowed for your location.

Hope this helps.
