Tax Law (Questions About Taxes)/roth ira

Hi john, I am 83 years ,marry and work part time. My wife works full time. Our combine income is $40k. I have a Roth ira before marriage and would like to continue contributing to it. My wife doesn't have one. I read that if file marry jointly I can contribute $5500 for me and additional $5500 for my wife. The question is, can I contribute in my account only or she needs to open one too

Thanks for your question.

You would have to open a separate account in her name.  Since you are over age 55 you can contribute $6500 as can she if she is over that age.  Additionally, I am sure you know and it is not a problem, but you one of you must have earned income  to contribute.  your contribution is limited to your combined earned income.

Hope this helps.
