Question My friend's father lives in a nursing home. He would like to pay me $14/hr to go visit him periodically. Let's say about 5-10 hrs a week. I set my own time and decide what we will do during that time. I can take him to the park or zoo or wherever--- just basically a little companion care. My friend says I can be an independent contractor or an hourly employee of his father's estate(although his father has no other employees). What am I? Is there an advantage of one over the other? Thank you for your advice.
Answer Ruth:
You would be an hourly employee. If you want to be an independant contractor you would set yourself into business that is have business license; advertise your services to many different companies and individuals; publish advertisement that is letter head, business cards, telephone listing. otherwise you are an hourly employee.
