Question My husband did not file taxes for two years before we were married, we filed last year jointly as a newly married couple. Expecting to get a refund of 3400 i was surprised when they sent us a bill for 1089 for his back taxes. I am just wondering if they cant just take the 1089 out of what they owe us and send us what's left over. We have a new child and I am finishing up college and we really cant afford to repay the $1089.00.
Answer Your husband needs to file the tax returns he did not file. You may not owe as much as the notices say. If you do not make payments, the IRS will intercept your 2008 return. If you got none of your refund back, it is because he did not file, it is not because he owes. Have him file now and they will release your refund less the amount owed.
