Expert: Mike Wellman Date: 1/8/2008 Subject: Social Security Income
Question I am still employed and my spouse is not. She is eligable to take her social security benefit. My question is if she takes it does my income count towards earning that would cause her benefit to be reduced. The second part of the question does her social security earning need to be reported when I file a joint return even though she has no other earnings.
Answer Your earnings will not affect her social security benefits. Her SS should be reported and portion of her earnings could be taxable. Without knowing what your earnings are, I can't be specific. If she files separately, all her SS earnings will be subject to tax.
