Teaching Advice - Private school to public school

Expert: Patricia Ireland-Williams - 4/19/2008

Question
Hi! I went to public school until 6th grade and then went to a private school for 4 years(last year right now) and I was wondering if you could tell me what I need to do to get admitted into the grade I'm supposed to be in, which is the 11th. Such as, do I need to finish geometry, world history or geography, chemistry?

Answer
Since I do not know where you live, nor the requirements of the school you are intending to enter, I can only encourage you to IMMEDIATELY go to the school you plan to go to and make an appointment with a counselor in order to enroll in school for next year.  Be sure that you take transcripts from your freshman and sophomore year in that they will need this in order to determine what you need.  If you are in the U.S., most high schools now require 3-4 years of mathematics as well as 2-3 years of science, 4 years of English and 3 years of social studies in that these are required for college entrance.  Each school district is different but all are based on state and national standards which I have stated above.

Best wishes on your transition back to public school,

Patricia
