Question Dear Laura,
How do I encourage my students for being a good team member in research projects?
Thank you.
Answer Hi Reza,
I am not sure exactly what you are asking, but I will try.
If you are asking how to encourage students to BE good team members, I can tell you what my colleagues and I do.
We have the group members evaluate each other as part of the grade. This can be as formal as you like, with rating scales and checklists or with simple comments. You can keep these anonymous or have them signed, depending on your class goals. If you couple these with your observations, then you can get a pretty good picture of who is doing what. And students know that part of their grade is given by their group so they work harder.
Another thing that helps is assigning roles. If each person has a part of the project he/she is suposed to do, you are less likely to get one person who is doing everthing.
