Subject: Gaining Cert to Teach

Question
I am a college grad with a BS Business Admin and have been working in my field for the last 20 years. I need a change and have always considered teaching. I am a strong communicator and have good team building skills, so I feel I could be a good teacher.

My question is, what exactly do I have to do to get certified to teach? I have looked online and I see offers for MA in Education etc., but that's really not the route I want to travel. Ideally I'd like to take the additional basic courses needed and get into a classroom. Can you offer some insight? Thanks

Answer
Hi!
I am afraid that there is not an easy answer to this one. In general, teachers are liscensed to teach by states (well, except national certification, which is a whole different ball game). Some states have alternative certification programs (I know Arkansas and Missouri both do, as I have taught in both states), but I could not tell you for sure which ones do.

I see Florida has an alternative certification program (http://www.volusia.k12.fl.us/StaffDev/ACP.htm), and this looks like a list of alternative certification programs nation-wide: http://www.ncate.org/public/AlternateRouteList.asp?ch=106

Good luck. Try looking up "alternative teacher certification" and your state on Google.
Best,
Laura
