Question Do you have any good ideas for Math games?
I'm teaching mathematics at a local facility for disadvantaged youth. The class runs for three (3) hours with a 15-minute break about halfway through.
As you can imagine, by the time the last hour rolls around the students are pretty much "mathed-out" -- they're just plain sick of math.
Anyway, I tried playing some games for that last hour and so far it has gone fairly well.
One game we all played was a bingo-type game based on changing percents to decimals to fractions and any combination thereof.
The kids liked it, but are growing a bit tired of it.
I've searched and searched online for games we can play as a group, but I'm getting at my wit's end.
Can you help?
I have 15 students in class and their ages range from 17 to 25.
Thank you very much for handling this request.
Sincerely,
Jim
Answer Jim,
I am sorry, but Math is not one of my strengths.............but I just did an internet search
and there were 66,000 websites with math games. Many of them are free and printable. I did a simple search "Math Games for Kids".......I am sure that you will find lots of great ideas there.
Also, any teaching supply store will have books you can buy which have lots of enrichment teaching ideas in all subjects.
Also, don't forget basic board games......you can easily incorporate math into those.
Also, I once sponsored a workshop wherein we cooked and did math with kids and parents...................a good time was had by all figuring out percentages, measuring, quantities, time, content, etc.
You can also do fun things with taking kids on a "measuring trip"...........give them tape measures and have them measure everything in your room then go outside and measure the playground, the equipment, the gym, etc. The ideas are endless. At the end have them plot the data and teach making charts and graphs.
Making their own flash cards and having timed contests is also fun...
