Subject: Shift from French to English

Question
Dear Ms. Laura
I know my question is a little bit strange.
I have two girls in Grade 7 and Grade 2 studing in Frensh + English as a second language. I'm moving to Dubai, UAE where French schools are rare. Do you think they can shift to an english school easily.
Regards,
Fares

Answer
In my experience, young children pick up language easily, especially in an immersion situation. The younger girl will likely pick up the new language faster than the older one. But I think both of them will be fine in a month or two.

Some ways to ease the transition:
* Since you speak English, practice speaking English to them at home.
* Watch television or movies in English and pause it every few minutes to talk about what has been said.

Best of luck,
Laura
