Subject: Summer School
Question Hi,
I'm am starting my first real job in a week. I'm going to be teaching summer school in a IEP class with six students. My background is elementary and special ed but these students are ages 15-17. There is no specific curriculum that I need to teach this summer so I'm pretty much on my own. I have no clue what to teach them. I am planning on asking them what they would like to learn about, but I need some things to fall back on. Any ideas would be wonderful. Thanks so much.

Answer Asking them what they want to learn about is o.k. but I doubt that they will want to learn what they need to learn. If I asked my kids that question, they would want to work on the internet and "research" celebrities and rap stars.
I would first evaluate each student in order to determine their academic needs. Remember, you must follow their IEP which has already been predetermined by a series of tests and experts. I would start with giving them a simple oral reading test, a basic math test and by taking a basic writing sample. I then would look at the district curriculum for their grade level and design lessons that will support them according to their academic needs.
Try to use creative approaches to the district curriculum so that the students enjoy their time in summer school (most kids do not like going to summer school so it is critical that you make it interesting for them).
Best Wishes
Patricia
