Question
Hi My name is Anne and I currently live in Ireland.I am 17 years old and researching different careers that I could take.I would really love to move to America someday and become a teacher there.I was wondering if I trained in Ireland to be a teacher here then would it be possible to teach in America someday with my qualifications that I get here.Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated!

Answer
This is a wonderful goal for a young woman of your age.  If you attend a four year University and receive at least a BA degree with an minor in Education, you should be o.k.
Once you get to the USA you will probably have to take a few additional courses in order to pass the state mandated competency tests as well as the state and national constitutional tests.  For specific information about what each state requires, you can look up their website and navigate to "teacher certification".  My state is Arizona: http:/www.ade.state.az.us/
I would also recommend that you contact your University's counseling office and ask them to prepare a curriculum plan for your goal of being certified in Ireland as well as in the U.S.A.

Best wishes on this endeavor!

Patricia
