Teaching Advice - Tutoring

Expert: Patricia Ireland-Williams - 12/14/2007

Question
Dear Expert,

I have a fairly simple question. I am going to begin tutoring a girl Two days a week. For two hours an evening.

The mother has asked me to figure out what I want to get paid.

Could you give me some figures? I don't have any kind of degree. I am just a college student who is helping a good friend.

I don't want to short myself, but I don't want them to have to pay too much

Answer
Individuals without a degree usually get $10-$15 an hour where as individuals with a degree get $25 or more an hour.  This also depends on the subject matter, the grade level and your community.  If you have alot of tutors, you have to be competitive but if they are not readily available, you certainly can negotiate the price.

Best wishes on this project!

Patricia
