Question
what is the best way to study old paintings?

Answer
The best way for children to study paintings of the great masters is to understand "how' the painter did what he did, and then try the same technique or style.

For example, to study Van Gogh, the children can paint with thick tempera paint using a palette knife or a flat stick. This is called Impasto.  They do not need to copy the subject matter of the painting, only to try the technique.

To study Coubert, the children can make "cloudscapes" with watercolors, because Coulbert is famous for his cloudy skies.

I have 80 ideas in my book, Discovering Great Artists, covering 80 great masters from the Renaissance to the present day. You can see more ideas on my website if you do not have the book. Go to http://www.brightring.com   and then click on "FREE ACTIVITIES". Next go to "Discovering Great Artists" and you will find ideas there, as well as in "PREVIOUS ACTIVITIES".

I'm not sure if this is what you were asking. Your question was brief and didn't offer much detail such as what ages you are asking about, or if you wanted art ideas or suggestions for books or whatever....I hope I was able to give you some valuable or helpful information.
