Question
Hi
My daughter is in her final year and seems to be doing well. She is a grade A student....but takes long to do her essays, her homework! and her comprehension skills are a bit slow.I have bought her a preparation pack for uni as she is trying to get into medicine. In these tests there is a time limit. What can she do to improve her comprehension skills and speed so she can improve her chances.I have spoken to her teacher about this, but she dismissed it and says that my daughter is a perfectionist. Can you please suggest something as her uni admission test is in three weeks and timing in these tests is important. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi,
I found a couple of websites with good information for you. Bear in mind that improving reading comprehension and writing is complicated and takes time. But you daughter can improve.

The first site is: http://www.ucc.vt.edu/stdysk/stdyhlp.html

Much of this information has to do with notetaking skills, but notetaking is one way to improve reading comprehension. SQ3R is a very common method for dealing with materials that are hard to read.

The other issue it sounds like your daughter needs to work with is the writing process.
This site:http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/general/
has a lot of good information about improving writing. The most important thing is to think about what she wants to say (and take a few notes) before she starts to write.

Good luck. Your daughter is lucky to have such a caring and supportive mother.
