Question I am a counselor at a local day camp with about 25 10-13 year old kids in a lower to middle class area and am concerned for the kids at our camp who are constantly playing video games. After bringing up my concern to some of the other counselors it seems like they gave up on organizing active games for kids to play because of lack of involvement/motivation for the kids. I have tried myself to lead activities but i am not getting the support from the other staff and kids. Every morning and afternoon, if we are not on a field trip the kids are playing video games in our rec zone room -- i can't stand this but i guess i need more games and stronger motivation tools to use...i know something needs to be done, more improved relationships with the kids and with each other as well as more physical activity, i just need help on ideas for quality games and routines (such as the daily riddles i do) to bring together the camp. Thanks for the help!!!!
Answer Hello,
One way to motivate your group is to give them an
identity. Have them pick a name for their group and then have them create a group song, slogan and or banner specific to their group. With one group I had we started every day to the song " We will rock them" by Queen. Create teams within your group and start tournaments in differnt sports. For example, have a World Cup Soccer tournament or an NBA tournament - have prizes for the winners as an incentive. If you have girls and boys in your group you can make a girl's goal in soccer worth 2 points and boys one to promote more teamwork. Create an Obstacle course for your group. Include things they have to go over, under and around. Time them in course to see who can record the fastest time. Have them create their own obstacle courses.
I am not sure what type of equipment you have at your disposal, Go to website PE central to look for games and activities that you think your group might enjoy.
