Tech & Internet Stocks - locate lost stock purchases

Expert: Dr. Joseph de Beauchamp - 5/9/2007

Question
I have a friend, her husband passed away and her computer went down.  How can we locate any stock purchased by him?  We have found 1000 shares LVLT.  How can we locate the others?  I was told there was no way without a paper trail.  Trying to find any paperwork now.  Stocks purchased over the internet, through AOL financial & money.

Answer
If these were bought, then the stocks were purchased through a broker dealer. You might find this out by contacting AOL. With a broker dealer indetified, then you will be able to pull the rest of the records from the broker dealer.

The more difficult way is to guess at what companies that there might have been purchased. If you know the companies, then you can call each company's transfer agent, and local the number of shares this way. The best way is to find the broker dealer and find some statements.
