AboutDr. Joseph de Beauchamp Expertise As an MBA professor, I publish on over 2000 public companies. I engage in conversations with them daily. I love to help people find good advice in this complex market.
My domestic partner is psychologically disabled and hadn't filed taxes since 1997. I'm helping him do this now before IRS levies his benefits. During those years he sold some stock. He worked for Intel so this was mostly employee-owned stock in addition to some Cisco shares. We know how much he sold the shares for but the info regarding how much he originally bought them for is completely lost. His broker doesn't have it. Intel doesn't have it because they contracted that part of their bookkeeping out. The independent contractor doesn't have it. IRS is threatening to treat all those sales as capital gains unless we can find this info. Is there any way to find out or estimate the average selling price of that stock during the years in which he bought it? Are there some kind of guides or statistics available that we could research? Thank you for your time and consideration. Judy Kennedy
Answer Without some dates on the buying, this is going to be tough. You could find this cost is you had the dates. If you had the dates, you could go to the public library and look up the price on the day of purchase. The broker should have this in archives, and you might ask again for the back office support for this information.
