Subject: dating/ parents hate guy you like

Question
QUESTION: how old do you have to be to date a 19 year old guy in PA?
how do you get your parents to like him when they hate him just because hes older by 3 years?

ANSWER: Emily,

There are no rules/laws saying when you are able to date someone. Elementary children "date".

However, if there is sex involved, it's a different story. PA laws say you have to be 16 to legally consent to sex, and the age difference can not be more than 4 years apart.

Your parents are acting like many parents do. He's older, so they may think that he is going to pressure you into doing things he's old enough to do. They may also think that older guys want sex, as opposed to younger guys (your age) who just want girlfriends.

I had a similar situation. I was 21, and my girlfriend was 18. Our birthdates were very close, but it still seems like a 3 year difference. Her parents weren't too fond of it, but after a while, they got used to it. If you do like him, then you need to talk to your parents and explain why you like/love/have feelings for him. Reassure them that he does not control your actions, you do.

QUESTION: so my parents can't tell me i can't date him as long as we don't have sex right?

Answer
Emily,

That is true. However, your parents may be able to try and tell you who you can and can not date if you're living under their roof. This is why I'd talk to them, and explain why you like him so much. Telling them that you won't be having sex with him is something they will want to hear as well.
