About Z. Amanda Chen
Expertise
I have always been interested in fashion and actually design/redesign some of my own clothes. Since I'm a teen, I can answer questions relating to teenage fashion, what kinds of clothes make you look older or younger than what you actually are, and where you can find bargains that resemble designer clothes. However, since I'm usually focused on the new, I don't know much about vintage clothing. Additionally, although I know a lot about skirts, shorts, and shoes, outerwear fashion is beyond me.

Experience
I design or redesign some of my own clothes, and I am constantly trying out new looks. Additionally, I've also learned quite a few fashion tricks on how to stand out and how to blend in.

Education/Credentials
None.

Subject: Casual Wear in a Teen Beauty Pageant

Question
My daughter is in a teen beauty pageant with the hopes of winning a scholarship. She needs a causal wear outfit but this is also an opportunity to her to showcase her personality not just her outfit. She came use props such as an ipod, cell phone or a musical instrument. We want an original concept that will wow the crowd. She can't talk because the MC will be announcing her. So everything will have to be done within that 1 minute walk. Any suggestions?

Answer
Tina,

I would love to help you and your daughter, but this is such an important issue that I just don't feel comfortable giving my advice, especially since I don't know your daughter at all.  However, I will try my best.

Does your daughter love music?  If so, is it because she plays an instrument or is it because she's the girl with the coolest, newest tunes?  For the former, display her favorite instrument with embellishments, like a ribbon on the scroll of the violin or a distinguishing strap on her saxophone.  For the later, have her wear her earplugs in her ears and a ipod clearly visible hooked into a belt-loop or the outside pocket of her purse.  Is she a social butterfly that loves networking?  Then I would suggest hanging her cellphone on a cute cell-necklace to show off.

You can just forget the common conceptions of "casual wear" as everyone considers casual differently.  If your daughter wants to show off her leadership, confidence, organization, or sharpness, have her dress in a lacy camisole with a smart blazer and a-line skirt.  If she's social, popular, and trendy, have her dress in a cute fashion top and figure-flattering jeans.  Just make sure she likes what she wears and is confident in it.

This is the best I can give you, however.  I do not know your daughter personally and neither do I know a basic description of her physical characteristics.  While looking for pictures, I stumbled across these photos of a scholarship pageant.  The bottom few photos feature the "casual wear." http://flickr.com/photos/nead4d5/sets/72157604057589665/

Well, I hope that helped, and good luck!
~Amanda
