Teen Health - Dieting during a growth spurt?

Expert: Samantha Mattingly - 2/14/2008

Question
Hi,

I'm in the middle of a growth spurt (1/2" taller in 2-3 months).  I've spend the past month on a diet, about 1700 calories a day and an hour of exercise (walking, jogging, and weightlifting). I'm 5'2" and 145 lbs.
Am I stunting my growth by dieting in the middle of a growth spurt?  Should I wait to diet, or am I O.K.?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Jennifer,

Well, I think you are OK doing the diet now, but for the best results, wait until the growth spurt is over. Oh, and an hour a day is what teens are supposed to get, so great job!  Also, weight lifting can build more muscle, which means more weight on you.  Hope this helps.
