Subject: Do I have a social anxiety disorder?

Question
I'm really worries and I think I have some sort of a social disorder. At school, I can't talk in lessons without fear of embarrasing myself or blushing and whenever i am put on the spot, my face goes all red and I fee; sick and like i'm going to cry. I feel like crying if someone bumps into me in the corridor because I feel like they do it on purpose. I got into a panic today because I was scared I had to read something out to the class and I get scared over talking to people and I can't breathe when I am on the spot. Please help me because I don't know and my mum said she won't take me to the doctor because she doesn't believe me.

Answer
Dear Brooke,

I'm sorry that you feel this way, and that your mom won't believe you.  I suggest you talk to another adult you know well, say maybe a school nurse.  It's okay to have fears and to be embarressed, but you don't want to feel this way all the time.  There is a possibility that you may have a scocial anxiety disorder.  You really need to get your self-confidence level up a little.  The first step to help solving this problem is talking to an adult BEFORE you do steps to solve it.  Talking to a trusted adult will help find exactly what is wrong with you and it can help give you more self- confidence.  Hope this helps, dear.
