About Junko Expertise I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Question My daughter is 15 and very athletic. She is a setter in volleyball, short stop in softball and a point gaurd in basketball. Last summer she dislocated her shoulder during basketball camp. We made it through basketball and volleyball season and she dislocated it again in softball. Her MRI showed a minimal hill sach deformatity and otherwise fine with the exception of some edema.
Of course, the surgeon wants to do surgery (that is what he does). Any suggestions on ways to keep this from happening again?
Answer Hi Ronnie,
It's very common for shoulder dislocations to recur especially in young athletes. I think that regardless of whether or not your daughter has surgery, she should be rehabilitating her shoulder with the help of a physical therapist.
Your dauther may, in fact, need to have surgery. I am not in a position to recommend or not recommend surgery, but if you do not trust the orthopedic surgeon you've seen, you should get a second opinion.
