About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Subject: Loose and burny stool from IBS?

Question
Hey,

Well I finally went to the doctor for my digestive/stomach discomfort and problems. She said most of the symptoms look like IBS. Gave me a prescription of some pills that you put under your tongue. They are for abdominal pain. Though it seems like its worse after I take them for some reason. Dont know if coincidence or what. The thing is she said my diet change is more important. I still have bowel problems. Do you know if IBS can cause loose burny stools? I just hate the burny feeling when I go to bathroom.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Kevin,

I'm glad you saw a doctor about your abdominal discomfort.  I'm guessing that your doctor gave you a smooth muscle relaxant for your abdominal pain.  Is that right?  I'm not sure why a smooth muscle relaxant might make your pain worse, but it's quite possible that it might not ease your pain.

IBS can definitely cause loose stools/diarrhea.  I think people might also experience a burning sensation.  There are some alternative treatments to IBS that can also cause a burning sensation around the anus.  Have you been taking any peppermint oil?

As your doctor has probably already told you, nobody really knows exactly what IBS is and what causes it yet.  Unfortunately, this means that treating IBS involves a lot of trial and error in order figure out what works for you.  Keep track of any foods that make your IBS symptoms better or worse.  Stress can also cause IBS to flare of worsen, so try to keep yourself as stress-free as possible!

I hope this helps!
