Question This weekend I was diagnosed with mono. I know they call it the kissing disease, and my boyfriend had it four years ago. Is it possible that he gave it to me? And if so, is it possible that I can give it to him again?

It is unlikely that your boyfriend gave you mono because mono usually only lasts two to four weeks - not four years. The fever and sore throat usually subside after two weeks, and the enlarged lymph nodes and spleen can persist for a few more weeks. In some teens, fatigue and weakness may last for weeks, and occasionally months. It is very unlikely that you can give it to him again because the body makes "anti-mono" antibodies when a person has mono. However, the infection is not entirely wiped out. The "anti-mono" antibodies "hide out" in certain white blood cells and in the lining of the throat and salivary glands. These antibodies protect against repeat mono infection. In other words, he is immune to the disease since he already had it - similar to how you usually only get chicken pox only once. Therefore, once you have had mono, you should not develop it again if you are exposed to someone with the illness. If you want to be extra safe, your boyfriend should avoid contact with your saliva - coughing, sneezing, and kissing - until you are better. Oh, and do not donate blood for a while. Hope you feel better soon! Write back if you have any more questions!
