About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Question
I have a question about my physical last week. My parents still have both my little sister’s and my physical in the same room. She is 10 and I am 13. I didn’t mind until this year because this is the first time that I had to get completely undressed for the exam. Up until this year I could keep my boxers on, but this time I had my privates checked so I was completely naked. The problem I have is that while my parents gave me privacy by leaving the room, my sister was in there the entire time. I had to get completely undressed in front of her, I was uncovered the whole time I was lying on the table, and when I stood while the doctor felt my penis and testicles, he did it where she could see. I even had to give the urine sample in front of her. After mine was done we switched places, and she had to do the same. I know she’s only my sister, but it’s still embarrassing to be naked in front of her while my penis is erect. And I’m sure she was just as embarrassed. Is it common boy and girl siblings to share a room for physicals when we are this old?

Answer
Hi Darien,

Given my limited experience, I would say that is not common practice, especially at your ages and given that your parents left the room for the purpose of privacy.  If you continue to see this doctor, you should tell him that you are uncomfortable having your sister in the room, and he should respect your right to privacy.  I'm sorry you were put in that awkward situation.
