About Junko Expertise I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Hello Junko, First of all thank you for taking the time to answer my question. My step son is 17 turning 18 and his voice hasn't deepened, it's still high pitched. Do you think I should be worried? Should I wait another year before I make him get it checked? Do you think it's delayed puberty although he looks almost developed?
He also seems to not be able to grow a mustach although he does get hair under on his neck and side burns. I alway's thought it's because he's white, and some white people can't grow facial hair. Is this also a sign of delayed puberty. Should I be afraid of that too?

Hi Michael,
You mentioned that your step son looks almost developed. Do you know for sure if the rest of his body has developed normally? Did he go through a growth spurt? Does he have normal body/pubic hair? Are there any other possible signs of delayed puberty besides what you've already mentioned? If not, then he may not be experiencing delayed puberty. But, it might be worth it to get him checked out by a doctor just in case.
I hope this helps.

Yes he has had all of the above except well he's still short but that's normal in his family considering their all Irish, and one last thing he doesn't grow hair on his face, like a mustach, but don't get me wrong he does grow hair under his chin, and side burns that reach his chin. I always thought of that normal for some european people. IS IT?
again thank you for your help.
Answer Hi Michael,
If he doesn't grow ANY hair at all in the mustache area then that is not normal. But if you mean that he can't really grow a mustache because he doesn't grow much hair there, then you're right, it's not uncommon for caucasian males to not be able to grow a full mustache.
