About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Subject: He coughs...

Question
One day, me friend drove me someplace but along the way he kept coughing, I asked him what was wrong and he told me nothing, he had this cough for months now. I asked him what he had and he said he didn't know so I was wondering if you knew what this was and if so, could you please tell me how to help him?

Also, if it helps any, he doesn't have the cough 24 hours a day it seems to come and go and from what I know it comes out when he's thinking or when he's driving(a lot when he's driving) but apparently, it happens everyday, just not all day.
I thought it was a somewhat stress cough or something...I don't know.

Answer
Hi,

Honestly, the best way to help your friend is to encourage him to see a doctor.  There are so many things that could cause cough that without more information and a physical exam, it is difficult for me to say what might be causing your friend's cough.  I will, however, mention a couple of common things that could cause cough.  It's possible that your friend's cough is the result of an allergy to something - possibly something in his car since his cough worsens while he's driving.  It's also possible that he might have asthma.  The common cold will also cause cough, however, it is less likely since your friend has had his cough for several months.  Heartburn is also a common cause of cough.

I hope this helps!
