About Junko
Expertise
I can answer most questions pertaining to teen health, thought I cannot give medical advice. I can explain medical terminology, describe medical conditions and hopefully help people understand what is going on with their bodies. If I don`t know an answer to a question, being a medical student, I can easily find out the answer since I have many resources I can refer to.

Experience
I am a 4th year medical student.

Subject: counting heights?

Question
Dear Junko,
I believe many seems to miscalculate height in centimeters and height in feets, or maybe it was me? I am 164cm. How tall am I actually in inches and feets? Frankly speaking, am I too short for a 23 years old man? How to be taller without any surgery? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Chow,

Since 1 inch = 2.54 cm, you would be about 5 feet, 4.5 inches tall.  Your height is mostly determined by your genes (how tall your parents are) and somewhat affected by your diet.      You can use the following formula to estimate how tall you should be (plus or minus 4 inches or 10cm) according to your parents' heights:  take the average of your mom's and dad's heights and add 2.5 (if heights are in inches) or add 6.5 (if heights are in centimeters).

In general, you are on the short side, but that may be your normal height, especially if your parents are also shorter.  Unfortunately, at this point, you are fully grown, and there is no way for you to become taller without having surgery.

I hope this helps.

-Junko
